Events - E-Waste Recycling Initiative

The PPA joined hands with Cinnamon Grand’s Green Team members in collaboration with Think Green (Pvt) Ltd, to encourage E – Waste recycling amongst students of St. Bridget’s Convent. The program was conducted on 31st July 2012 for Grades 9, 10 and 11. The E – Waste recycling initiatives for schools -’No Time to Waste’ has been launched by  Cinnamon Grand as part of its commitment to increase awareness and share knowledge and environmental friendly practices, with the younger generation.  Over 500 students of the school participated in the programme. 

The program kicked off with an introductory video about the digital age and the Sustainability program of Cinnamon Grand. Mr. Shivahar of Think Green (Pvt) Ltd. a company recognized by the Central Environmental Authority then made a presentation on “E-Waste disposal in Sri Lanka” with a video clip on E-waste. A very interactive Question and Answer session followed with presentation of environment friendly gifts by Cinnamon Grand to the students who provided answers to the questions that were based on the presentations.

Electronic waste (E-waste) is a relatively new subject to people in Sri Lanka, and most people do not realize the extreme danger it can cause to the environment and humans with improper disposal of electronic waste. Rev Sr. Shermila Jayawardena, Principal of the Collegiate School who gave the introduction to the program stressed the importance of such programs for the school. Dr. Nirmala M. Pieris, President PPA provided a brief description of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda of the PPA. The program ended with the presentation of an E-Waste collection box to the school.

Following up on the Workshop the collection of 254kg of E-waste (comprising of 15 CRT Monitors, 11 CPUs, 3 Printers, 2 Fans and 2 UPSs) was facilitated for the school.
